CS Lewis on Pride

Wednesday 23 April 2008 at 2:10 pm Lewis’ chapter in Mere Christianity on “The Great Sin” has a nice section on pride and how it relates to other sins. Seems very similar to Keller’s “sin under the sin.”

“Pride can often be used to beat down the simpler vices. Teachers, in fact, appeal to a boy’s Pride, or, as they call it, his self-respect, to make him behave decently: many a man has overcome cowardice, or lust, or ill-temper, by learning to think that they are beneath his dignity—that is, by Pride. The devil laughs. He is perfectly content to see you become chaste and brave and self-controlled provided, all the time, he is setting up in you’re the Dictatorship of Pride—just as he would be quite content to see your chilblains (minor ulcers on fingers or toes caused by cold) cured if he is allowed, in return, to give you cancer. For Pride is spiritual cancer: it eats up the very possibility of love, or contentment, or even common sense.” Mere Christianity

This is why the older son is in such jeopardy while the vices of the younger son prove disastrous in the short term but more easily dealt with in the long term. On the road to hell the younger son and his vices are the hare and the older son the tortoise. pvk

The History Class Challenge

Monday 21 April 2008 at 9:46 pm Someone on CiC is a history professor and asked for input on the 45 minute allotment he gets to make on Jesus in his survey of world history. The due date was short. Here was my off the cuff attempt: more...

Of Justice and Generosity

Wednesday 09 April 2008 at 1:56 pm I wrote this piece in response to a Voices post regarding a Muslim school supported by public money and a Jewish school supported by public money. In the CRC there has been a long tradition of Christian Schools and under the surface a tradition of resentment for both having to pay for public education people's children aren't using as well as pricey Christian School tuition. more...

Godpod 10

Monday 07 April 2008 at 12:09 pm I’ve been listening through some of these. I don’t find all of them equally helpful (of course) but I thought Alister McGrath as guest was interesting. They discussed the Canaanite Genocide and Richard Dawkin’s atheism. Godpod 10 pvk

CS Lewis, the house rebuilt

Friday 04 April 2008 at 10:52 pm

I find I must borrow yet another parable from George MacDonald. Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on: you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently he starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of—throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were going to be made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.

Tim Keller Gospel Incarnation

Thursday 03 April 2008 at 9:29 pm This is the third of three talks given someplace in England. Most of it is a sermon he gave at Redeemer Presb. so if you're looking to find another free sermon, here's one. Here's an outline I made of it for my council development. more...

Thomas Cranmer

Thursday 03 April 2008 at 7:45 pm

This is from Godpod #3 an interview with Dr. Ashley Null on Thomas Cranmer starting about minute 13:50ish. Good stuff. Later in the interview there is a lot of good stuff on worship and Scripture and transformation. This is a rough transcription I made listening to the MP3 so it isn't exact and neither are all the sentences perfect.

Godpod

Godpod

I’ve just started listening to it. I decided to start with 1 instead of 33. So far (I’m up to #3) #3 really stands out with a discussion with a scholar on Thomas Cranmer. The first little bit is historical background but then they get into the Christian motivation for doing good and implications for public worship it’s really quite excellent. Link to the mp3 file. They are also podcasted via ITunes so they are easy to download through there as well. pvk
