June 2, 1930: “Ready for the singing trip”
June 2 - At Rev. Shaver's - New Era. Sick stomach at night. Collection at evening a bit better than $20.00
June 3 - To Lucas. Casey kissed Susie goodbye at Ferris. Program at Lucas - collection about $19.00. After Casey left to Maring's, sang some songs with Rev. Schaap. To bed about 12. Up at 8:45.
June 4 - Wednesday. Fixed box at old blacksmith in McBain. Rev. Maring's for dinner. To Highland. Practicing in church basement. Program in evening. All of us stayed at Rev. John Holwerda's overnight.
Thursday, June 5 - Up rather late. Back to Rev. Schaap's for dinner. Off to Prosper. Supper at Rev. Ralph Bos. Program. All four slept there. Planned fishing trip. Rain in morning.
Friday, June 6 - Rain all the way to Ellsworth. Fish dinner at Kalkaska - $.60. Nice audience. Collection 33.94. Casey and I slept in parsonage. First letter from Grace when we arrived.
Saturday, June 7 - To Rudyard. Beautiful drive. Birch bark. Indians. Beaver Island. Cross Village. On and across the ferry. Frank De Jong and bride. Smoked fish. To Rev. Hanenburg about supper time. Casey & I stayed there.
Sunday, June 8 - Holwerda preached in PM. I taught SS lesson to girls of 11-12. Program in evening much appreciated. Collection of little church $21.74.
Monday, June 9 - Up about 2:45 AM and off for Vesper. John K. had sent letter to Vesper, special delivery & we received answer back. Sure. Never had anything like that happen to them before. Sang in Vesper in evening. Collection $15.65. Slept at Mr. G. Joling's place with Ca Casey. [Vesper would become father's first pastorate. He began there in November of 1932 and stayed at Vesper until the end of October of 1940. The first five and a half years of my life were there, and so I have loads of memories of living in the place.]
Tuesday, June 10 - Breakfast - 3 eggs. Two and one of Casey's. Off to Baldwin. (about 165 miles) Arrived about 4:30 PM. Stayed at Rev. Jansen's. He not at home., At program church packed to the doors. Collection 30.11. Pie and ice cream sale in basement afterwards. Humorous numbers expected. Holwerda's "Charge of the Light Brigade", my accordion/ mouth organ duet on chair on platform of chairs, etc. $10.00 more.
Wednesday, June 11 - Wrote letter to Grace up in study. Dinner at Jansen's. Mrs. Jansen formerly Dora De Jonge, or something similar in sound. On to Pease, a bout 117 miles, arriving about 5 P.M. Through St. Paul & Minneapolis. Supper at Rev. Moes. Audience of about 650. Collection $37.47. Casey & I stayed at Vedders.
Thursday, June 12 - Cleaned up car. Dinner there. To Princeburg. In sunshine saw rainstorm approaching. In it and through it. Sunshine. Passed granite quarry. Granite boulders sticking out of ground. Rolling country, good black ground, farmer's groves. Arrived at Van Farowe's. A few young folks came about 60 miles that evening to hear program. About 550 in audience.
Friday, June 13 - Breakfast & dinner at Van Farowe's. Rain. Letter written about 2 PM. To Bunde - about 9 miles. Slippery crossroad of black mud - in ditch and out again. Program for German people in evening. Cordial but bashful. Casey and I at Gerde's.
Saturday, June 14 - To Edgerton. Arrived about 11 AM. Casey & I at Huiskens. The John's at Tony Tinklenburg's. Sang for Leota people in afternoon. Small crowd - farmers in fields. Bill Vande Kieft & wife in Rev. Lyzenga's parsonage while he at Synod.
Sunday, June 15 - To church in Edgerton morning & afternoon. Rev. Ehlers & church full. Sang in Holland Sunday evening. House packed. Had to stay on platform for lack of room.
Monday, June 16 - Practiced in church in AM & s tarted letter. To Floris Vander Stoep for dinner. Pipestone with Francis & Lily Huisken in afternoon. Program in evening for bull house. $42.99. Casey & I at Hartog's a while afterward.
Tuesday, June 17 - Slept until about 8:45. Pulled stakes for Sioux Center after dinner. Arrived about 5 P.M. At Rev. Ypma's, relatives of Meyer on Hall. Sang for S.C. II. 23.84. Met Frank De Jon again. Evidence of much friction between the two churches.
Wednesday, June 18 - Pulled out for Sheldon after dinner. (25 miles) Stopped at Hull for mail. Mailed pigeon, Pipestone. In Sheldon. At Rev. Bajema's for supper. Program. Small crowd. Rain & dirt roads prevented people. Collection $17.04. Casey at Bajema's overnight. I at Van Zwolle's
Thursday, June 19 - To Kalsbeek, tailor. Vest remodeled. For Hull about 11 A.M. Wedding at Boyden - Kooimar & Wassing. Entertained. To Hull. No one to receive. Pastor gone, correspondent gone, Vice Pres. knew nothing of it. Ate in restaurant. Dressed at Jack De Vries' home. Fair sized crowd. $17.65. Vander Spoel's overnight.
Friday - June 20 - B breakfast & dinner there. Ice cream in afternoon. To Rock Valley. Grasman's. Small crowd but $24.75. Many stayed home on account of program given by College year before. To bed 12.
Saturday, June 21 - Letter writing, accordion practice, to bank. Dinner. Lying in sun. Very warm. To Ireton, about 17 miles south. Program in evening. Not a large crowd. Casey 7 I stayed at Juffers, friends of Casey.
Sunday, June 22 - To church morning & afternoon. I had dinner at Koster's place where we were to stay at first. The John's stayed at Sinke's. Program at Lebanon in evening. A little visit at Rev. A.N. Kort. Slept at Juffer's.
Monday, June 23 - Left for Kansas 9 AM. South into Nebraska. Rolling land. Beautiful with sunlight & shadow-grain turning golden. Dinner at Oakland. In Beatrice at night - cabin. Passed through Lincoln & viewed the capitol in afternoon.
Tuesday, June 24 - Kansas & waving golden grain - reapers & binders busy. Corn no further advanced than farther north. Passed through Smith Center, geographical center of U.S. Found Rotterdam Church. Program for about 250. Appreciative. $25.00. At Vos for supper. John's stayed there. Our host - Vander Guissen.

Wednesday, June 25 - To the bluff's with Rev. Reuben De Haan. Old initials in rocks. Rock-like petrified meat-probable. Off to Luctor after dinner. Arrived at church plenty early. Saw no one but janitor, so found Soodsma - clerk. Supposed to have eaten at Dekker's but did not know it. Dekker unhitched & was gong to come, but dinner off. About 450 people at program. Collection $54.70. Casey & I stayed at Dekker's, John's at Van Coten.
Thursday, June 26 - Off for Vona. Rows of sunflowers along roadsides in Kansas. Dry prairie in Colorado. Found Vander Meer, old friend of Pa. Chicken for supper but Casey deprived - sick of strange water. About 6 families left of Vona church. Small audience but very appreciative. Collection 14.78. * single dollars in collection.

Friday, June 27 - Slept long. John's at Browers. Hunted on prairies for a while in morning. For Denver. At Simon, 90 miles from Denver saw first mts. in distance - Pikes' Peak. Arrived about 4:30 PM. Stopped at home of John De Vries, brother of Jack. Looks much like his mother. Directed to Mrs. Bandsma. Widow & son. Program for about 450. 1st applause on trip. Met several friends after church. Casey to Boulder. John's & I at Bandsma's.

Saturday, June 28 - Holwerda off to Alamosa. (280 miles) Met Mr. Koops. Rode around city parks & museum - fine taxidermy work & painting. In mts with Mr. Noordewier & daughter & son. Met Schooland's. Echo Lake. Son of Van den Berg & family. Summit lake above timber line. Traveled about 120 miles in mts. Looked down on Denver lights on way back.
Sunday, June 29 - To church AM - communion. "I am the bread of life" - Rev. Van Dellen. Sang at San. in afternoon. Met Bos girls - used to go to Calvin. Visited with John Byleveld at night.

Monday, June 30 - Left for Alamosa about 6:30. Mts. on right all the way, now near, now far. Beautiful scenery. La Vita pass in PM. In Alamosa (really Waverly about 6 miles SW) well on time. Casey and I at his cousin Schooland, whom he had never seen before. Fine little audience in evening. Stayed around and talked after meeting - young people sang. Marguerite Zwieringa. In valley with mts. all around. Irrigation, mosquitoes. Japanese raise head lettuce, peas, cauliflower.
