Tuesday, July 1 - Up at 4. Off at 4:45. Much mt. traveling. Couple of passes. Hot sun. Bad roads in New Mexico. Farmington (250 mi) 2:30 - Morgan & few Indians. At Nahashitti (8 P.M.) tire trouble & roads. Program at 9. George said, "No hurry." Indians stolid yet appreciative. Kobbe's family there also. Bitsey interpreter. All stayed at Oppenhuisen.
Wednesday, July 2 - Bitsey fixed tire of own accord. On prairies with Gengi & Bitsey to see hogans. Pictures.
Wednesday, July 2 - From George Oppenhuisen to Gallup to Zuni. Mr. Kuiper. Woman putting adobe on floor. White plastered walls. Good = "kok-she." Christian School-quite up to date. Children's drawings. Turquoise, pottery. Road slippery to Gallup. Rehoboth - Ref. Kamp's for supper. Asked no collection-got $15.94. Casey & I slept at Rev. Kamp's . John's at Mission House.
Thursday, July 3 - Kit Carson's cave - Initials - "Hi & Grace" - Rev. Kamp's a flat. Kit drove Navahoes in here. Dinner at Mission house. Off for Grand Canyon, Gallup, painted desert, petrified forests preserved by Gov. Wonderful polished surfaces. Museum of wood-big slabs. Night drive - & flat.
Friday, July 4 - three flats. Grand Canyon at seven. Kingman - shower in cabin. (Wallopai) Slept 4-9:30. Restaurant (Jap) found time changed. Needles - 2 P.M.
Saturday, July 5 - Into California - Yucca Palms, Down through Cajon Pass into San Bernardino. Date palms & others. Orange groves. Navels ripe in January. Blossom in March - 8 months to mature. Bellflower. Quite a time to find Buma's - had moved from Hynes to Bellflower. Washed & slept from 4-7 PM. To Hynes with Agnes driving.
Sunday, July 6 - Casey &U I to Los Angeles - 47th St. Mrs. Kiel his cousins. Bible Institute in evening, right near beautiful new library. Back to Bellflower.
Monday, July 7 - Swim at Long Beach. Plunge also in ocean. Oil derricks-each about 3,000 barrels a day. Dinner at Buma. To Redlands. Rev. Schans playing golf in back yard of church. Picked ripe orange. Ate two figs. Marvin & Julia. Casey & I slept at parsonage. Pictures & letters from Van der Spoel & girls.
Tuesday, July 8 - Rode around with Rev. Schans. Big "R" in mt covering 13 acres-Made by students of U. of Redlands. Italian vineyard - largest in world. Dinner at Buma. Sent away turquoise & petrified wood by freight. Cost us $5.25 for three of us. Bought a gift of appreciation for Agnes Buma. Sung in Bellflower in evening.
Wednesday, July 9 - Up late. Wrote letter, farewell to Buma's & Siebersma. In L.A. for lunch - Kiel's. With Mr. Berry to Aimee Mc. Pherson's Temple. Showed through by lady guide. Drove around through Hollywood after that, then to Bible Institute for the John's and back to Kiel's. Excellent dinner. Program in L.A. church. Asked afterwards why accordion wasn't played. A chat, coffee, change of clothes & off for Sequoia. Casey & I slept fine.
Thursday, July 10 - More driving. Made over 20 miles per gallon over the ridge. Big oil reservoir. On road to Sequoia whole row of Oleander trees about 6 feet high leading to farm house on both sides of driveway. All in bloom. Rugged foot hills. Dark green orange & lemon groves on lower slopes. Amphitheater Point - 4,267 feet - Looked down on road winding, winding, back & forth. Moro Rock to NE - looked very near, but perhaps 1 1/2 miles away, and 1/2 mile higher than Amphitheater Point. Mule deer came right up to camp. Very tame. Top of Moro Rock - 6,719. Look for miles & almost straight down. Picture on top of Sequoia Log. Drop of 4,700 ft in 16 3/10 miles. Pre-historic Indian paintings on big rock, as yet unable to be deciphered. Called "Hospital Rock." Good road all the way to Hanford. Casey & I stayed at Mr. Wm. Ruygh, 445 W Myrtle St., Hanford, California. Cold watermelon before bed.
Friday, July 11 - Good night's rest. Took care of money. Wrote post cards to S.S. boys. Wrote to Vander Spoel also. Gas - Shell & others - .08 today. Left for Ripon after dinner. Many Chines & Portugese in Hanford. Very hot. Parsonage about 7. Splendid new church. Wedding - program. Back in parsonage 2:30 AM.
Saturday, July 12 - Up 9:30 - breakfast. Wrote a little. Packed butterflies. Dinner. Saw Chr. School. Almond trees in school yard. On way to Alameda 1 gal gas, water, oil checked, windshield cleaned - all for 19 cents. Carnations 10 cents per doz. Bananas - 10 cents per doz. Alameda an Island. Foreign schooners - Alaska & back. To Vermeer in Oakland. Through tube- 9 10ths of a mile long. Mrs. Vermeer a Hertel girl. Vermeer Univ. man. Sells aluminum. Fine home. Very friendly, considerate, & hospitable. To bed well on time.
Sunday, July 13 - Beautiful morning. Breakfast & to church - Lutheran building - altar & cross & pulpit. Holwerda in morning. Visited Mrs. Hoekenga & family. Quite a number of children. Play piano, cello, trumpet, violin, clarinet. Dinner at 1. Wrote letters in PM. Church at 6 PM. Singing at Hoekenga after church. Lunch & to bed.
Monday, July 14 - To Frisco with Mr. Andriesse. Ferry - Nose into wedge. Dolphin in water. Still some cable cars. About 50% Catholic in S.F. Twin Peeks , Market St. Street cars go under through tunnel of 4 miles. Up on Twin hills. Down on Frisco. Saw fog rolling in from ocean. Army head-quarters near Golden Gate. Anti-aircraft. Cliffs & shore. Gulls back on their own rocks. Sea lion on one. Five small fishing boats came in rolling through big waves. Old wreck on shore. Boat "Gjoa" came across in 1905, only 70 feet long, given to park by Amundsen in 1909. Met Burgomaster from Netherlands. Seal on rocks. Aquarium - numerous many colored fish of Pacific & elsewhere, seals & sea lions. Natural museum - stuffed animals with wonderfully natural background. Museum of Art - Paintings, sculptures, relics of various countries, military relics of World War & others. Japanese Tea Garden - buildings, fences, garden work, arched bridge. China Town - Shops of all kinds with Chinese lettering. Jewelry, hardware, groceries, cooked & raw meat - quite an odor. All kinds of fish for sale. Man painting. Chinese figures. Back on ferry. Mr. Andriesse took shells to send. 1811 Buena Vista Ave., Alameda, Calif. Program. Fine collection for small group. Some vegetable soup before retiring.
Tuesday, July 15 - Up at 3:30 and right after a good substantial breakfast. Back to Ripon. Then on to Yosemite. Mts & heat. Soft drink in tavern of '49's. Stop for water many times. Most streams dry. One splendid stream running alongside road. Three wheeler log train. Portland cement quarry. Rocks - purple, black, red, orange, brown mixed. Merced River-rushing, rolling, foaming, gurgling over the rocks & large, high, gray granite cliffs all along. El Capitan!! Light gray & almost straight up about 3,600 feet straight drop. Bridal Veil falls-fine & gauzy like real bride's veil. Deer & bear. Yosemite Falls. Half Dome Rock. Pitched camp. Walked around on stones in river. Meal about 5 PM. To foot of Yosemite Falls. Spray. Climbed over boulders back to bridge. Saw five falls from Glacier Point. To bed.
Wednesday, July 16 - Up at 4:30. Climb to Glacier Pt up ledge trail - Very steep - took about 2 hrs. This rock 3,254 almost straight up from Campo Curry. Many kinds of wild flowers, lizards, Blue Jays, little mountain falls along large part of way up. Very cold &U good for climbing. Back down along four-mile trail. Oatmeal & pancakes meant for 9 AM at 11:30. Began writing letter-boys dressed for swimming. At the river letter continued. To Bridal Veil Falls-complete rainbow in pool. Wind blows spray back & forth. Back to road along rocks in the river. Mirror Lake. Evening dinner Wiener roast. Little singing - to bed. Blue Jays - Black on head and shoulders. Big vest. Water Ousel - little lighter in color than Catbird. About that size perhaps little thicker, with very short tail.
Thursday, July 17 - Up at five. Wet shoulder from water through tent by Schuurman. Oatmeal, pancakes, eggs, coffee. Rev. Mulder followed deer around. Four miles of 17 degree climb. One way road - out at odd hours, in at even. A beautiful and interesting drive. Continual twisting or going up and down after the first climb of four miles. Picked up big pine cones - sent from Ripon. Dinner in Restaurant - Schuurman paid. Left Yosemite 6, got in Ripon 12. Uneventful drive. Large stretches of flat country. Rice fields toward evening. In Red Bluff by 10 PM. Good Municipal cabins - 2 beds for $1.50.
Friday, July 18 - Got up at 7:30. Fixed two slow leaks. On the way, winding roads through mountains, fine roads. Beautiful arched bridges. Look backward - change of perspective. Mts seem to loom up large as trees begin to look smaller. Beautiful snow-capped Mt. Shasta. Road about 4,000 above sea level. Mt. Shasta rises over 10,000 ft higher. Entered Oregon. Tasted mineral water. Smelled forest fire. Beautiful green fields. Casey & I up from 10:30 on.
Saturday, July 19 - Beacon light shining on mist, wavy effect. Our first cloudy day for a long time. Lots of tall pine trees. Seattle - climate & landscape much like N. Mich. Everyone looking at large pine cones. One woman said , "They don't seem real." John's at Serkes. We 3 miles out at De Vries. Very fine Chr. people. Old folks, Peter and Theresa. Dairy farm. Log house.
Sunday, July 20 - Church in morning - Kenbeek. Slept in PM. Church in evening - Holwerda. Mouth organ & accordion. Pete plays too. Wrote letter to Grace.
Monday, July 21 - Practiced at church. Dinner at Rev. Byleveld's . On Mr. Arend's 47 foot yacht in afternoon. Fishing for Salmon. One big pole on each side with 2 lines on each. Piece of grass on leader by hook to attract attention. Just lost a salmon. Little sleigh-bell on line so you can tell that a fish is on. Name of boat - [Can't make it out] Conveniences - cooking room, small state room, bunks for sleeping, toilet, tanks for fresh water. Very fine. Row boat. Ford motor. Fine audience - full house, Reformed, Methodists, etc. Saw Mt. Olympus with Mt. Baker in distance from bay. Mt. Baker full of snow on top.
Tuesday, July 22 - Farewell. On to Vancouver, crossed on Deception Pass Ferry, & saw tide coming in. Beautiful red poppies growing wild along road side. A dike to keep water out which is higher than the land on that spot. Over the border - Government liquor store - "open." In Westminister, one Japanese, one English ship. Casey & I at L. Kool, 1129 Woodland Drive. Children - Dorothy, Adrian, Tena, Gertrude, Rita, Nellie - 15-works out as children's' maid - good looking. Whole family jolly & full of pep. Small group organized 4 years ago. 1 Five dollar bill in collection. Talked til almost 12:30.
Wednesday, July 23 - Up at 8 & off for Stanley Park. Said to be most beautiful drive in world (seemed to me we had some [illegible] as beautiful before). Figurehead of "SS Emperor" of Japan which came through water here from 1891 - 1922 - a dragon. Pre-historic Indian c carvings on rocks. Alaskan totem poles. Profusion of Maples, Firs, Cedars, ferns, grapes, etc. Green all year around. Prospect Point - Inlet from English Bay. See boats going out and in, would like to watch all day. Profile of Queen's body on ride up mt.-can see with a little imagination. Picture of car on big red Cedar trunk. Back in city - officer mounted on horseback. Hindus from India. Occidental dress but heavy black beards & black turbans. Blueness in Hydrangeas caused by natural iron in soil. (Can get results by putting iron filings in soil. Largest suspension bridge in world - 4,500 feet long, 200 feet above river under it in the middle. Suspended by 2 one-inch cables on each side. Marine drive - to end of road - end of US 99. Back over border. Everything examined closely - even spare tire. In Linden - in evening Rev. Westra's church - Big crowd - big collection. Stayed H Oordt 2 blocks west of church. One girl-Betty still at home. New house- everything spick and span. Beautiful flowers & lawn.
Thursday - July 24 - Argument with Casey about wandering covenant children - doesn't want to take Hoeksema's stand, but is close to it. Coffee at Rev. Muiskens - quite a sportsman. Dinner at home of Rutger's folks. Very fine people. Sang a few numbers for them. Near Bellingham - big saw-mill and lumber piles. Freighter in harbor ready to load up. Many logs in bay. Rev. J. Van den Hoek Jr.- old playmate of Casey, Mrs. also an old friend. Used to play in orchestra - daughter of Kuiper of Franklin and Eastern. Most excellent folks. The Rev. reminds me much of Louis Huizenga of Eastern Road. Children - Calvin-5, Julius - 7, Hildred - 8. ("Amos & Andy" - 7:30 - 10:30 in GR) Pretty good crowd & very attentive.
Friday, July 25 - Off for Zillah. (Eating a piece of smoked salmon the while which Kenbeek gave to me.) "Eels for sale" Beautifully green at Issaquah near Lake Sammamish. .Beautiful drives here and there. Mt. Lakes & rivers with Indian names. Gravel from North Bend to Cle Elum. In process of re-graveling and oiling. Where finished - excellent. Old Ford off road - nothing but frame left, "University of Michigan" painted on it. Yakima Valley - sage brush but now under irrigation. Otherwise no good. Grain still green here, some b being harvested, however. Curious & beautiful rock formations - different shapes & colors - red, green, blue, yellow, etc. Follow swift rushing river for quite a distance through pass. Nothing but dry sage & dead grass on the mammoth hills. Through town of Zillah and into fruit country- kept up entirely by irrigation. All stayed with Mr. William Oord. Seems to be most prosperous around here. His sons have farms right around him. Pumps run day & night - pumps 300 gal per minute. Picking pears - green, now measure them with ring. A man of small education but a great deal of business ability. A great deal of good sound judgment. A man of faith. A witness for Christ all the time - will not let an opportunity go by to rebuke one that swears. One son & 2 daughters still at home - Jake, Winnie,. Tina. Splendid collection at program for small group.
Saturday, July 26 - Decided last night to stay over Sunday. Can make Manhattan by Tuesday evening. A day of leisure. Swimming in Zillah pool. Good, clean water. Mr. Oord likes to play accordion. Some more experiences of Mr. Oord.
Sunday, July 27 - To church twice and Sunny side in the evening. Casey's first service in P.M. People in these two place very appreciative. Don't get program here very often. Very fine family - common and unsophisticated. Mr. Oord truly an inspiration.
Monday, July 28 - Up at five - off at 6:30. Mr. Oord runs into orchard & comes back with a box of prunes. Farewell. Parting with tinge of regret as on many other times. Orders to stop at [illegible] - two bags of apples. Can see snow-capped Mt. Adams from Zillah. Long, dreary stretches of prairie to Spokane. Very good road. In Idaho road under construction - one way traffic - dust!!! Had to stop once. Near Wallace, about best mining in country - lead & silver. Much dust & bad detour. Three boys in old Ford on hill. Night driving, bad road - two flats. Stopped for night.
Tuesday, July 29 - Kenbeek & I in grainfield. Cold. Walked up road to get circulation. Slept about 1 hour in back seat with Holwerda. Up at 4:30 to fix tire. Hot wheat cakes in Missoula. Talk about good! Now for some sleep. Two more flats AM. Rough road full of sharp pieces of stone. Two more flats this PM. Pulled in Manhattan & turned to what people call Church Hill about 5:30. Very large church. Good crowd. Casey & I at Vander Ark's.
Wednesday, July 30 - Forgot my watch there. Dinner at Boseman. Into Yellowstone - Karst's Camp - Asbestos-Mythronz - a certain kind of petrified wood - perhaps the waterlogged kind. Mostly young trees along Gallatin. Man at Karst's Camp said all the big trees burned 45 years ago. Girl with flat hitched a ride four miles back to get a tire fixed. Rain!! Our first since Princeburg, Minn - sunshine on hills just ahead of us. A pretty little pond skirted with small red flowers growing in the water itself. In the park strange rock formation - looks as though it's all been molten together instead of slab-like, like ordinary rock. Rushing cascades of Five Hole River. Steam & hot water - washed handkerchief. Saw Old Faithful spout. Ranger said that on some places one could see one about the other. Twelve growths of giant Red Wood trees. Cabin - cold driving night. Canvas on upper & roof. Not enough covering.
Thursday, July 31 - Returned this morning to pick up thread. Paint pots - mud - constant "blub, blub." Many deep holes shaped like morning glories-beautiful blue. Some boiling full of steam. Brown colors along edge in some places. Streams of warm, almost hot water. Excelsior Glacier - very hot water over red, yellow, brown, gray colored rock. Excelsior a very large blue pool boiling up here and there. Had shirt off & got regular hot steam bath. Wind blowing hot & cold at same time. Gem pool - about 25 feet across and looks to be about 25 feet deep. Very, very clear & beautiful blue. Morning Glory Punch Bowl - Rim about 15 " high & about six feet across Keeps bubbling up. Formed it's own rim evidently. Continental Divide 8,262 ' above sea level. Missouri River watershed. (Atlantic slope) Snake River watershed the other way. (Pacific slope.) Bears. Took picture. Like prune - not apple. Another bear ate a whole one - caught pieces thrown into his mouth. At West thumb of Yellowstone Lake a bear was eating sugar cubes thrown out by people of tourist autos. Kept looking around, figuring every time which was the [illegible] point for his next delicacy. Wouldn't even sit up for more. When man wouldn't give it to him he turned his back. Fish hatchery - saw eggs and the only kind of trout they have in Yellowstone Lake. Both male & female are striped in certain proportion & eggs & sperm are shaken up together. As soon as egg is fertilized it develops a tough covering so that no more sperm can enter. Yellowstone Lake 7,730 above sea level & 26 miles long. Plenty of rain this PM. Mud Volcano - Hot gray mud constantly being forced into pool out of hole in side of hill. Dragon's Mouth - much like it, only with cleaner water - keeps coming out with an explosive sound and then running back. Elbe River makes insignia of Northern Pacific. Saw upper falls from distance - 109 feet. Brown bear at garbage can obeys urge of Kenbeek, "Come on, hurry up" for a piece of sugar after taking one more reluctant look at the garbage. After eating the sugar he was so free as to stand up and poke his nose into our front window close enough to kiss Kenbeek, when after a hurried command Holwerda drove off. Cabin 106 at C.J. Lodge. Rented blankets & comforter, built fire in stove, undressed this time and had a cozy, comfortable night. Plenty of brown bears.
