August 1930

Friday, August 1 - Off for lower falls - 308 feet - drop of the Yellowstone River. Went down steps part way & Kenbeek & I went down rest of way down steep rocks. Canyon most beautiful - red, purple, lavender, brown, gold, etc. on its sides with the green Yellowstone River rushing through its center.  A drive through the wooded mts. Rain and lightning all around us in the Mts. & here and there a patch of sunlight. Dunraven Pass 8,859 feet. Rock formations along edge of canyon part way down looks just like palisades.  "Needles"- high needle-like projections of rocks. One beauty rises almost 300 feet. Dunraven Pass not free until July 1 on account of snow.  Saw Osprey in Canyon this morning. Snap shots of beautiful Jupiter Terrace at Mammoth Springs.  About 1/2 hour after - blasting - harder rocks - jumbles of big rocks.  Book says, "Massive"blocks of travertine. Obsidian (black glass) cliff - road bed at that point made of it.  Went to Artist's point. Beautiful scenery. Casey & I went down and climbed back up trail. Saw some ospreys, one carrying a fish in its talons.  Went down stairs of Sunset Trail to near foot of Lower Falls, climbed over to a large slab of snow. Some climb of steps! Hot log! On way to Lake Junction we saw two elk.  Rented cabin and then away to feeding place of bears. Saw a few black bears & several grizzlies who were of course masters of the day, also one over the other.  Most of the black bears disappeared when the grizzlies increased. One mother griz with three young.  Also ravens & gulls there.  Supper. Cabin 115. Letter.  bed.

Went to school at same time. Have a "klein maar dapper" [small but gallant] daughter of about 19 or 20 who teaches school. Quite an interesting little personality.
